Project Details :
DSM successfully completed the demolition of the former Sheffield Retail Quarter in the Centre of Sheffield. The works comprised the removal of asbestos from a number of properties within the retail quarter and demolition of the former Grosvenor House Hotel complex with associated retail units.
The 10 storey hotel, rising above a car park podium structure was constructed from reinforced concrete and adjacent retaining walls were stabilised prior to the demolition commencing.
Project Constraints :
The project was located in Sheffield City Centre and was immediately adjacent to leading high street stores and major arterial traffic routes.
The works were delivered in close proximity to major civil engineering works on the Sheffield Ring Road. and an ‘island site’ landlocked by live roads and retail premises. Complex phased, traffic and pedestrian diversions were implemented around the site to enable the works to be delivered in a safe phased manner. We absorbed additional asbestos removal into the programme, and at the client’s request accelerated the programme by working nights and weekends in order to clear the site for a fast track re-development of the site by an incoming contractor.
Our work scope also increased to include removal of retaining walls, adjacent subways, reduced level dig and provision of one metre deep piling matt.
DSM completed the entire works on the agreed contract completion date.
