Former Wardle Storey Site, Brantham Works, Manningtree Essex
DSM were commissioned to undertaken the demolition, environmental remediation, and land reclamation of the 168 acre former ICI site at Brantham in Suffolk.
The site was split into two sections separated by a major railway route to London. The works included the decommissioning and demolition of redundant production buildings whilst minimising disruption and maintaining security for existing tenants on other parts of the site. In addition to this the scope included the removal and safe disposal of significant quantities of nitrose cellulose explosives that were used in the manufacturing process.
A previous use of the site had resulted in the leaching of significant quantities of oils into the ground. A substantial ground remediation operation planned in conjunction with the Environment Agency and involving the use of a mechanical oil interceptor system was carried out to restore this SSSI and RAMSAR site.
